June 8 through 18, 2009
To expand and enhance the listening and spoken language opportunities for children who are deaf or hard of hearing through professional education and mentorship.
The 2-week TCU Listening and Spoken Language Summer Institute is a week-long lecture series (June 8 - 12) followed by practicum in Auditory-Verbal techniques (June 13 to 18). The Institute is open to educators, speech-language pathologists, and audiologists who work with children with hearing loss and their families. Participants may register for the first week alone or for both weeks.
The lecture series will be held on the TCU campus and videostreamed to remote locations selected by the Texas Education Agency. Lectures will be presented by Listening and Spoken Language Specialist-Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapists (LSLS Cert. AVTs). There will be an emphasis on hearing technology, auditory functioning, spoken language development, and strategies for facilitating listening and spoken language skills. Attendees will receive a notebook of written materials and selected readings. Attendees can earn up to 30 hours of continuing education hours.
Practicum will place at the Miller Speech and Hearing Clinic. Attendees will gain experience organizing case information according to a listening and spoken language framework, planning auditory-verbal learning experiences, utilizing auditory-verbal techniques, and coaching parents and caregivers. Parents/caregivers will participate in each session along with their children. LSLS Cert. AVTs will provide demonstration therapy, feedback, and coaching. Participants will be provided written feedback and goals for further professional development. The practicum week is limited to 20 participants.
The cost for the TCU LSL Summer Institute is $450 for Week 1 or $850 for both weeks. A limited number of apartment-style dorm rooms with kitchen facilities are available for rental on the TCU campus. For further information, or to be placed on a mailing list for registration materials, please contact Helen M. Morrison, Ph.D., CCC/A, LSLS Cert. AVT at h.morrison@tcu.edu.
